Alvin ISD Approves Contract for Elementary #14

The Alvin ISD Board of Trustees awarded the contract for construction of Elementary #14 at the regular school board meeting in March. Gamma Construction will be the contractor for the new school which will be located in Shadow Creek Ranch near the intersection of Kingsley and Trinity Bay. Trustees approved the purchase of the 15 acres in October 2009 as well as the schematic design by SHW Group. The school will replicate an existing design, which saves the district about 2.75% of the design cost.

Funding for the construction of Elementary #14 was made possible in the November 2009 bond package, of which $14,000,000 was allotted for the school. The construction of the new school, however, will not exceed $12,228,000.

Construction will start in April. The school is expected to open in June 2011 and will be ready for students when the 2011-2012 school year begins in August 2011.

"We are excited about the beginning of construction for Elementary #14. This is a sign that our community continues to grow and that our citizens continue to support the education of our children," said Dr. Robby McGowen, Alvin ISD Superintendent of Schools.

As the district proceeds with the construction of Elementary #14, a committee will be appointed to consider a name for the school. Board policy states that students, staff and District residents may submit nominations. Schools may be named for an individual that has attained prominence locally or nationally in the fields of education, science, art, statesmanship, political science or military achievement or have been an early Texas pioneer or an outstanding President of the United States. If the name of a place is to be considered, the criteria should include historical relevance. Nominations must be presented in a brief two paragraph statement that contains biographical or historical data and reasons for justifying the choice.
